Winter turns the Bernina line into its most famous image — a red train threading a white world, Lago Bianco frozen and the pass buried in snow, the Engadine a scene from a postcard. That the line stays open all winter across a 2,253-metre pass is itself remarkable. The catches are short daylight, so views are compressed into the middle of the day, and real cold at the pass. For the classic snowbound ride, winter is unbeatable.
Summer: glaciers and green
Summer shows the line's full range: glaciers at their most exposed, Lago Bianco a vivid turquoise, alpine meadows in flower, and the descent to green valleys and palm-lined Tirano. Long daylight means more scenery per day, and the contrast from ice to near-Mediterranean warmth is at its sharpest. It's the busiest season, so reserve well ahead — but for the fullest views and the 'glaciers to palm trees' story, summer is the pick.
Autumn: gold and calm
Autumn brings the larches to gold on the slopes, thins the crowds and eases the booking, with the glaciers still visible before deep snow. The weather grows less settled, so a little luck helps, but a clear October day pairs high-alpine drama with off-season quiet, and the panoramic car is far less full. For travellers who value calm and colour over guaranteed sun, autumn is a lovely, underrated time to ride.
Spring: quiet and changeable
Spring is the in-between: snow still high, valleys greening below, and the fewest crowds of the year. Views can be mixed as the pass emerges from winter, and settled weather isn't guaranteed, but demand and prices are lower and the contrast between the white heights and the waking valleys is striking. If you'd rather have the train close to yourself and don't mind changeable skies, spring rewards the gamble.
